Thankful Cards

thankful-cards-1Why not write thankful cards to each member of your family this year, and hand them out at the Thanksgiving table? You can tell each person what you enjoy about them and why you are thankful for having them in your life.

My kids created some thankful cards by gluing pieces of textured paper, scrapbook paper or cloth onto a folded piece of card stock paper. Make sure you have envelopes that fit the card size. For me, it was easy to cut a card stock paper in half, creating two cards with each piece of paper. This fits the bulk envelopes I bought years ago for regular-sized cards. Then we arranged different shapes on the card. Make sure the colors go together—I used autumn-colored paper and cloth samples. We glued them to the card with white school glue.

For family members not coming for Thanksgiving, you can put the cards in the mailbox. Imagine the surprise people will get when they open the card to find how precious they are to you, and why they are important in your life. Turkey and Rice Casserole

what-to-do-with-leftover-turkeyDo any of us know what to do with leftover turkey the day after Thanksgiving? This yummy turkey and rice casserole is hands-down the best recipe that uses up some of the extra turkey. This recipe was given to me by my best friend’s mom. The crunch of the celery, Corn Flakes, and almond slivers juxtaposes against the soft boiled egg, chicken, and rice. Miracle Whip and lemon juice add additional depth of flavor. This will be the best turkey and rice casserole you will ever taste.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups chopped cooked turkey
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup
  • 3/4 cup Miracle Whip (mayonnaise would probably work)
  • 1 cup diced celery
  • 1 cup rice cooked in 2 cups of chicken (or turkey) broth
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon grated onion
  • 2 hard-boiled eggs, chopped

Topping:

  • 3 tablespoons of real butter
  • 1 cup of crushed Corn Flakes
  • 1/2 cup of almond slivers

Make sure the turkey, rice, and hard-boiled eggs are cooked. Then throw all the ingredients together in a large bowl, and stir it. Pour it into a large casserole dish. Melt the butter in the microwave, and mix with crushed Corn Flakes. Sprinkle over the casserole. Then sprinkle with almond slivers.

Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. Enjoy!

Turkey Candle

turkey-candle-holderTo make this easy turkey candle, you will need the following supplies:

  • yellow and orange tissue paper
  • brown ribbon
  • a picture of a turkey
  • white school glue
  • hot glue
  • glass jar
  • tea light candle

How to put the craft together:

  1. Cut the yellow tissue paper into squares. Glue the squares all over the jar until the jar is completely covered.
  2. Glue the picture of the turkey onto a square of orange paper. I found the turkey on a scrap of fabric I had. You can also buy a turkey sticker or clip out a turkey picture out of a magazine. Glue the turkey paper onto the jar.
  3. With hot glue, attach the ribbon to the top of the jar. I used sparkly brown ribbon.
  4. Place a tea light into the jar. Light the candle, and enjoy your beautiful Thanksgiving turkey candle!

Autumn Stained Glass Leaves

Materials:

  • black card stock paper
  • colorful tissue paper
  • scissors
  • tape
  • white school glue
  • gold glitter

To make these autumn stained glass leaves, start with black card stock paper. Draw a maple leaf in pencil. (It is easier if you fold the paper in half so that the sides are symmetrical.) Poke your scissors through the center of the leaf, cutting out the inside.

On the back of the black card stock paper, tape a piece of tissue paper on all four sides. You can choose orange, red, yellow, brown, or green.

Turn the paper right-side up. With white school glue, draw the veins of the leaf. Then outline the leaf on the black edge of the card stock paper.

Shake gold glitter all over the leaf. it should completely cover the glue.

Pick up the paper and allow all the excess glitter to fall off. Your autumn stained glass leaves are finished. Allow them to dry before taping them to a window.

Grain Art

Grain art is a fun activity to do in the autumn. It has an interesting texture and reminds us of harvest time. I bought dry grains in as many colors as I could find at the grocery store in cheap sealed bags:

  • green dried peas
  • black beans
  • red kidney beans
  • white beans
  • yellow lentils

We started with black card stock paper as the backdrop. If you want, you can sketch a design in pencil first, filling in one area at a time with glue. Then you glue down each grain. It goes faster if you dump the grain on top of the paper, then lift the paper up. It looks neater and more orderly if you place each grain one by one, but this might be tedious for younger children. It depends what kind of look you want.

You can do symmetrical patterns or a design representing an actual object. My daughter made a star in the center of her paper, spiraling outwards with alternate grains. One of my children chose to make a tree. Another son titled his grain art, “Green Blob with Asteroids.” My oldest son made a spiral ladder leading to nowhere. As you can see, everyone has freedom for their personalities to shine through this art activity!

Thankfulness Tree (with Maple Leaf PDF)

thankfulness-treeI’ve never actually done a thankfulness tree with my kids until this year. What inspired me was the dead tree on my landing that looked so pitiful that it was just begging for some gorgeous autumn-colored leaves to be artificially hung from it. Sure enough, it sprang to life, as if God’s design for this twig was to remind me of all that I have to be thankful for. My children actually thanked God for each other (which I found endearing), and for our warm house and their toys. Because we often forget to be thankful, this thankfulness tree will be a visual reminder during the month of November that I’m thankful for so many things.

I created the maple leaf PDF by drawing the outlines of four maple leaves. I then printed the PDF on card stock paper, two of each of the following colors: yellow, orange, red, and brown. You can cut out the maple leaves, punch a hole through the top of each with a thumb tack, and hang them up with Christmas ornament hooks. My children really enjoyed doing this activity.

Making Your Own Flavored Popcorn

Autumn is a great time to experiment with making your own flavored popcorn. If you pop it yourself in a large pot on your stove, it costs way less money, and it’s super fun for your kids to look through a clear lid to see the popcorn kernels popping around like crazy! It’s not that hard, really.

First pour 1/4 cup of vegetable oil into the pot to coat the entire bottom of the pot. Put it on medium heat. Pour 1/2 cup of popcorn into the pot. Don’t forget to put the lid on the pot. One time I was making popcorn at my friend’s house with her kids, and we were watching the popcorn on the bottom of the pot. The phone rang and for some reason we all walked out of the room without covering the pot. Five minutes later there was popcorn all over the kitchen! The air was full of flying popcorn! And it was impossible to put the lid on the pot when it was spitting out boiling hot kernels in all directions. We laughed hysterically, accidentally crushed popcorn under our feet, and finally got the lid onto the pot. It was a lot of work to clean up.

So don’t do that. Remember to put the lid on.

Let me back up to say that you need to take the pot off the heat for one minute after you hear the first popcorn kernel pop. Then return the pot to the heat. Shake the pot continuously back and forth, taking turns with anyone else in the room, making sure their turns are longer than yours so that you do less work.

As soon as the popcorn stops popping, shut off the stove, open the lid, and dump the popcorn into a large bowl. If you are having a party, everyone can make their own toppings in their own bowls or paper bags. My favorite flavor of popcorn is cheese popcorn, you know, the kind that actually looks orange. Well, I had no idea that you can get the same basic flavor by shaking Parmesan cheese on some air-popped popcorn. And it’s not bad for you, because it’s real cheese. It contains calcium and protein. Of course cheese has calories, but at least they’re not empty calories.

If you eat the air-popped popcorn with salt on it, it has almost no calories at all. Only do this if you’re on a diet, because it’s a whole lot better with butter. Real butter. Melt butter either on the stove or in the microwave, and pour it on top of your popcorn. Yum.

I’ve tried making mixtures of chili popcorn by using chili powder, garlic powder, and cumin, but I didn’t really like it that much. Maybe if you mix it with Parmesan and don’t go overboard on the chili powder, it would be more delicious, if you are in a spicy sort of mood.

Of course, the grand finale is caramel popcorn, which takes longer to make, but it’s delicious. Cook 1 cup of brown sugar, 4 tablespoons of margarine, 1/4 cup of corn syrup, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a saucepan under medium heat, stirring continuously. When it bubbles, stir another five minutes. Pawn this task off to your children, who have way more energy than you do. At the end of five minutes, stir in 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. Then pour it over the popcorn that is on a foil-lined cookie sheet. Bake an hour at 200 degrees, stirring every 15 minutes.

If you are impatient and want to eat the caramel popcorn without baking it at all, go ahead. It’s a lot stickier, but it’s still yummy. Especially if you’re pregnant and you have a craving for caramel popcorn, you definitely wouldn’t want to wait an entire hour!
