Haha well, because it doesn’t say “how many eyes do the children have all together?” that really does come across as a trick question. I suspect the answer key will say 10 but I think I would count it correct either way. If 10, then my child knows the math. If 2, then he is thinking logically and I wouldn’t fault him for that either.
Which did you do?
All children have two eyes, so my daughter is correct. LOL
I think it shows that your child knows her grammar quite well.
My take: The answer 2 is wrong, though I understand how the student got there. Since it says “all five children” rather than “each of the five children,” it’s plural, so the answer is 10. And the answer could be obtained either way–6+4 or 5×2.
Oops, I left out the second hyphen. That’s not -6.
It’s very rare that I laugh while grading math, but I had to show this to my husband! LOL Yes, she is technically wrong, but everybody does have two eyes.
That pesky word “all” can cause problems. If the word “five” was removed, then the answer would definitely be 2! Either way, I think her reasoning is adorable.
P.S. Which math program are you using for her? Is it Horizons? And do you like it? We’ve always used Saxon, but I actually decided to start Gracie out in Horizons this year. If nothing else, it’s so much more visually engaging than Saxon for the early grades.
We use Horizon up to 3rd grade, mostly because it’s so colorful. My kids all loved it.
I get why they said that, but I would say that the answer 2 is wrong.
I think it’s even funnier that she said “no” to whether she added or multiplied. “I used common sense,” might have been her answer to that last question. LOL
LOL she probably thought it was a silly question.
LOL, exactly!
You have to give her bonus points for that one – even if you mark the problem wrong. She gets a smiley faced sticker in my book!
Yes, her answer was definitely cute!
Very cute! I don’t think I would count it as wrong.
