Fiery Furnace Cake

fiery-furnace-cake

When reading the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego in the book of Daniel, why not make a Fiery Furnace cake to bring the story to life? I baked a rectangular cake and frosted it with chocolate icing. Then I tinted some white vanilla frosting with red food coloring. I placed a circle of red icing in the middle of the cake.

We cut flame shapes of fruit roll-ups and stood them on end into the red icing. (Make sure you buy the roll-ups in red, orange, or yellow.) If you want to make the flames more rigid, you can choose to not remove the paper backing. But be sure to warn the people eating the cake that the paper is still on.

Of course, you will need to add three LEGO figures, or you can use toy people from any other building set. You will want to have a fourth LEGO figure as well.

Now light some candles, so that you see actual fire coming from the fiery furnace. Red, orange, or yellow candles would be perfect. Turn out the lights and set those candles on fire. When you blow out the flames, place the fourth figure (Jesus) into the furnace. Then turn on the lights. At this point you can tell the children that God saved the lives of these three men, and that He was with them in the midst of the fire. In the same way in our lives, God is with us in the midst of our suffering, and He will bring us through it.

LEGO New Jerusalem

When studying the book of Revelation with your kids, you can have them build a LEGO New Jerusalem. This will help them to visualize what it will be like. It is a city with square walls. So you will build a wall around the city, with three gates on each of the four sides.

A river runs through the city. The river flows from the throne of God. The Tree of Life is also along this river, and its leaves give healing to the nations. All of our tears will be wiped away, and there will be no more crying or pain.

If you look at the bottom LEGO base, you can picture each of the bumps as buildings in the city of God. These would be the mansions that Jesus mentions to His disciples:

Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. -John 14:1-3 NASB

You can also choose to make larger buildings with individual LEGOs, making streets and neighborhoods. You have now completed your LEGO New Jerusalem.

Jesus Teaches the Multitudes (LEGO)

Jesus-teaches-the-multitudes

When Jesus teaches the multitudes in Scripture, He often has to get into a boat on the water, so that the water can project His voice to thousands of people who gathered to hear Him. My daughter decided to make a scene of Jesus teaching the multitudes out of LEGOs.

She began with a green LEGO base, and she made water on one side (out of two different kinds of blue) and yellow sand on the other side (with yellow and orange LEGOs.) She gathered a crowd of LEGO people. Then she built a brown boat and had Jesus sit in the boat and teach the people.

jordan-river-legoMy kids made a map of the Jordan River and the different cities that Jesus visited during His teaching ministry. Jesus would go from town to town, healing the sick and casting out demons. People would gather in crowds to hear Him speak, because He said things that were unlike any other religious leader of the day. In fact, the religious leaders despised Jesus, and they were the ones who caused Him to be crucified.

You can make a LEGO Jordan River by starting with a couple of LEGO bases. Look at a Bible-time map of the Gospels, and you can easily get the shape. Use blue LEGOs for the water and black LEGOs for the dots indicating the cities where Jesus taught.

LEGO Samson

LEGO-Samson

Have you ever thought of creating scenes from the story of Samson with LEGOs? Samson was definitely an interesting man from the book of Judges. His hair was extremely long, and for some reason the length of his hair had something to do with his incredible strength. Never has a man existed with more strength than Samson.

Maybe the reason why his strength left him when Delilah betrayed him by cutting off his hair–maybe the reason he was no longer strong was because God had commanded him not to cut his hair, and cutting off his hair was an act of rebellion to God.

I find it interesting that God chose such a womanizer for a judge. It seems like he kept falling in love with women who were not God’s people. He reaped the consequences for His sin.

So we made a LEGO Samson scene by starting with a green LEGO base. The building and pillars were made from white LEGOs, and my son set Samson right in the middle of the center pillars. The other LEGO men are walking around as if they were at a party.

This is the final scene of Samson’s life, after his enemies had gouged out his eyes as a result of Delilah’s betrayal. They made sport of him at a banquet hall, and they set him beside two posts that apparently held up the whole building. He asked God for strength one last time, and he was able to push down the pillars and destroy more of God’s enemies with that moment than all the rest of his life combined.

I hope you enjoyed our LEGO Samson scene! For more LEGO activities, click here.
