Fiery Furnace Cake

fiery-furnace-cake

When reading the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego in the book of Daniel, why not make a Fiery Furnace cake to bring the story to life? I baked a rectangular cake and frosted it with chocolate icing. Then I tinted some white vanilla frosting with red food coloring. I placed a circle of red icing in the middle of the cake.

We cut flame shapes of fruit roll-ups and stood them on end into the red icing. (Make sure you buy the roll-ups in red, orange, or yellow.) If you want to make the flames more rigid, you can choose to not remove the paper backing. But be sure to warn the people eating the cake that the paper is still on.

Of course, you will need to add three LEGO figures, or you can use toy people from any other building set. You will want to have a fourth LEGO figure as well.

Now light some candles, so that you see actual fire coming from the fiery furnace. Red, orange, or yellow candles would be perfect. Turn out the lights and set those candles on fire. When you blow out the flames, place the fourth figure (Jesus) into the furnace. Then turn on the lights. At this point you can tell the children that God saved the lives of these three men, and that He was with them in the midst of the fire. In the same way in our lives, God is with us in the midst of our suffering, and He will bring us through it.

David and Goliath in LEGO

lego-david-and-goliath

When reading the story of David and Goliath to your kids, why not have them re-enact the story with LEGOs? My kids created a scene on a green LEGO base. They had an army of Israelite LEGO men on one side and a LEGO giant on the other side. The LEGO giant was holding a spear. The David figure is leaning back to throw the smooth stone out of his slingshot. This stone will hit Goliath on the forehead and send him crashing to the ground.

The Israelites won this battle because David knew that God was mightier than any giant. When we put our trust in Him, we do not need to be afraid.

If you are doing a unit study on David and Goliath, here are some free crafts, videos, and hands-on activities that you can do:

Because of his courage (and because God had chosen him to be king through Samuel’s anointing), David became the next king of Israel. You can re-enact other scenes from the life of David. Pictured above is David sitting on his throne while people bow to him from other nations. God gave him victory over all the nations around him because He put his trust in God.

Crossing the Jordan in LEGO & Jello

Have you ever thought of creating the scene of “Crossing the Jordan” in LEGO and jello? This activity is super cool and a sure hit in your home or Sunday School to bring this story from Scripture to life for kids. This story can be found in Joshua chapter 3.

To build a “Crossing the Jordan” scene with LEGOs, begin with a green base. Build up huge waves on both sides with your blue LEGOs. Make them almost crash over the LEGO people that you place in the middle. You can also make an Ark of the Covenant with LEGOs for the priests to take across. Add plants and rocks to complete your scene.

To make a jello “Crossing the Jordan” scene, start by making two large boxes of blue jello with Knox gelatin. I used 3 packages of Knox gelatin and one cup less of water than called for. Place your jello in the fridge until it hardens. Then using a sharp knife, cut a path through the Jordan River. Pull out the pieces with your fingers.

Place some chocolate pebbles on the bottom of the path, and LEGO people walking through the middle of the path. Now you have completed your “Crossing the Jordan” scene in jello. The children will enjoy eating this scene.

Jacob’s Life in LEGO

jacob's-life-in-lego

When you are teaching the life of Jacob to your kids, why not make different scenes of Jacob’s life in LEGO? The first fun scene to create would be when Jacob makes lentil stew and Esau sells his birthright for the stew. Shortly thereafter, Jacob fools his father Isaac to give him the firstborn blessing, too. His mother was in on the plot, making some delicious stew for Isaac. Make a room out of white LEGOs and put a LEGO man in it to represent blind Isaac. (We found a LEGO man with sunglasses, which my son used to indicate that he was blind.)

Put the food on a tray and carry it in to Isaac. Meanwhile Esau is coming around the corner and will be very upset to find out his blessing has been stolen!

Jacob fled to his relative Laban’s house to get away from Esau’s wrath. So the next scene can be pens with sheep. One pen has speckled sheep and the other pen has white sheep. The speckled sheep are Jacob’s, and the white sheep are Laban’s. (see top picture)

You can easily make a stairway to heaven by making stairs out of white LEGOs and putting a man lying down at the foot of the stairway. If you want to have angels coming up and down, you can. Otherwise the stairway can be empty.

wrestling-with-angel-legoYou can make a scene of Jacob wrestling with the angel of the Lord, where Jacob’s hip was dislocated. Jacob wrestled until the angel of the Lord blessed him.
