Romans Road to Salvation Cake

romans-road-to-salvation-cakeI decided to make a Romans Road to Salvation cake because I wanted to illustrate the road to salvation visually in a way that would illustrate the sweetness of coming to Christ. I put sign posts along the way, with the steps on how to be saved.

How to Make a Romans Road to Salvation Cake

Step 1: Start by baking a rectangular chocolate cake. Frost it with chocolate frosting.

chocolate-cakeStep 2: Smash some graham crackers in a plastic bag. This will be the dirt. (I used the same technique to illustrate the desert in my Egypt cookies.)

graham-crackersStep 3: Sprinkle the cookie crumbs evenly over the top of the cake.

crumb-cakeStep 4: Snap some Hersheys chocolate for the bricks to lay down the road.

cake-with-pathStep 5: Assemble the signs and stab them into the road at regular intervals. Make sure the verses are in order. I printed the verses from the printer of my computer, glued them to black card stock paper, and taped toothpicks on the back.

romans-road-cakeThese are the verses I used for the signs (KJV). I purposely spaced them out so you could copy and paste these verses on a separate sheet of paper and print them out:

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned,
and come short of the glory of God.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death;
but the gift of God is eternal life
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love
toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners,
Christ died for us.

Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call
upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess
with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe
in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead,
thou shalt be saved.

“I’m So Sorry, Mommy…”

conversion-storyMy daughter Rachel ran into my room and burst out crying, “I’m so sorry, Mommy…” This was the second time in one week she had confessed her sin before I found out what she did. The first time was a few days previous, when she told me that she had stuffed some math pages behind her bed so she wouldn’t have to do them.

“What did you do now?” I asked her through her tears.

“I cut the beaded doorway with the scissors.”

Walking to the kitchen, I saw two strands of the beaded doorway cut. I was visibly disappointed, because our entire family had enjoyed going in and out of the doorway, swishing the beads. I had found that at a yard sale over the summer, and the odds of finding another one for $3 were slim to none.

She wailed, because perhaps she had liked the doorway the most. She and I walked into my room, and I sat down with her. My daughter has a knack for getting into trouble.

“The reason you do bad things is because you don’t have Jesus living in you. You can’t help but sin,” I said. “Would you like to have Jesus in your life, helping you to do what’s right?”

“Yes,” she said. I could see that she understood her depravity for the first time. I presented the gospel, which she had heard before, but somehow never appropriated to herself. I said that Jesus died for her sin.

“But I wasn’t born back then,” said my daughter.

“Jesus died for your sin before you were born. He paid the price for the sin of everyone who would believe in Him. Your sin deserves death, and He died so that you could have a relationship with Him.”

She wanted to know how to ask Christ into her life. I was so excited, I called my husband. “Can I lead her to Christ without you? She’s ready.” My husband said to do whatever God was leading me to do. So I hung up the phone and led her to Christ.

Every year when Rachel gets her MRI for the lump on her back, I never know if she will need surgery and die. Every year I have to put her on the altar of my life and choose Christ above my daughter. And every year I wonder when the age of accountability is, and that if she were to die, would I know that I would see her again in heaven.

Now with tears streaming down my face, I don’t have to wonder any more. And for this I am truly grateful.

Is Jesus Lord of Your Life?

is-jesus-lord-of-your-life“Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you– unless indeed you fail the test?” II Corinthians 13:5

Is Jesus Lord of your life? Many people think they’re saved when they’re not. That’s why we’re supposed to “work out our salvation with fear and trembling” (Philippians 2:12-13) even though our salvation is secure (Romans 8:30). Knowing that Jesus died on the cross for your sin doesn’t mean you’re saved. Satan knows that Jesus died on the cross for sinners. He knows it for a fact. “The demons believe and shudder.” (James 2:19) So if you don’t care about sinning, if you sin on purpose and have no remorse, then Jesus is not Lord of your life.

Just in case you’ve been reading my articles and don’t understand the spiritual things that I’m saying, or if you’ve never truly given your life to Christ, I plead with you to open your heart to what I’m about to say, because it will radically change your life. When God lives inside of you, you have peace with God, and the Holy Spirit will begin to transform you. People who are truly close to God, you can see it in their faces. It’s almost like their faces are glowing. When Christ rules your life, you can be set free from the power of sin because He paid the price for it.

The first step in salvation is to understand your own depravity, the fact that you sin and are unable to stop sinning. You must recognize your own selfishness, because all sin really boils down to selfishness. You like to think of yourself as good, but you’re really not.

Then you must realize that God is holy. He has no sin. He radiates love, joy, and peace in all directions, and He is so spectacular that even the angels block their eyes in His presence. Ezekiel and John both describe rainbows coming out of Him. And anyone who stands in the presence of God gets struck dead, because God can’t endure sin.

Jesus Christ has an enormous love for you that is so huge, it can cover all the pain you’ve ever had. To know the love of Christ is so incredible, because you must realize that He died on the cross to pay the penalty for every sin you’ve ever committed. He died, was buried, and rose on the third day. This is the good news.  God is coming to judge the earth, and if Jesus is Lord of your life, this will be a time of joy. If not, it will be a time of terror.

If you would like to make Jesus Lord of your life, just start talking to God, even if it sounds weird. Blurt out whatever prayer comes out. Be honest with God, and He will meet you where you are. You don’t need a formula prayer.

“If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9

Then grab your Bible and start reading. It will come alive to you and be so exciting. I think I like “Luke” the best if you’ve never read your Bible, because “John” is too surreal for a beginner. You also need to ask God to help you find a church, or you will never grow. If you’ve been a believer for years and you’ve stopped going to church, I’m slapping you upside the head (verbally) and telling you that God requires you to go to church or you will stagnate like a cesspool. (Hebrews 10:25)
